Online Sommelier Certification Pathway
Programs
From Beginner to Advanced Sommelier & Wine Management Certification

The ISG pathway is progressive, beginning at the foundational level and advancing through each stage. Candidates with prior formal wine education or substantial professional experience are encouraged to contact ISG for guidance on placement.

Step 1

Intermediate Wine Certificate (IWC)

Foundation in professional wine study. Major world wine varieties, introduction to wine tasting and evaluation, service fundamentals, and introductory cellaring principles.

For: Candidates beginning formal wine education, aspiring sommeliers, hospitality career entrants, and serious wine learners entering the ISG pathway.

Instructor support: 1 curriculum instructor and 1 tasting instructor.

IWC Program Details
Step 2

Advanced Wine Certificate (AWC)

A natural next step from the IWC. Go deeper into the world’s great wine regions — discovering how vineyard and winemaking shape wines, developing your palate, and growing comfortable with regional appellation law and food pairing, broadening beyond wine into spirits, liqueurs, and other beverages.

For: Candidates who have completed the IWC, or who have been placed at this level following guidance from ISG.

Instructor support: 1 curriculum instructor, 1 tasting instructor, and 1 essay instructor.

AWC Program Details
Step 3

Sommelier Diploma Program (SDP)

The cornerstone professional sommelier qualification. A comprehensive program uniting advanced wine knowledge, refined tasting, and cellar and beverage operations with the leadership and food-and-beverage management skills expected of a working sommelier, wine director, or beverage manager — formation for those ready to lead a wine program at a high level.

For: Candidates progressing through the ISG pathway toward advanced professional sommelier formation.

Instructor support: 1 curriculum instructor, 1 tasting instructor, 1 essay instructor, and 1 practical instructor.

SDP Program Details
Step 4

ISGM Program

Advanced, multidisciplinary study for those moving beyond the diploma into specialization and leadership. It brings together enology and viticulture, wine business and beverage management, nutrition, and sommellerie at an academic level — preparing graduates for senior roles in hospitality management, wine education, and the wider wine trade.

For: Candidates continuing beyond the Sommelier Diploma Program into higher-level academic and professional specialization, and toward advanced food and beverage (F&B) management capabilities — wine business strategy, financial and operations management, and leadership in the wine and hospitality industry.

Instructor support: Full instructor support and academic guidance are available throughout.

Step 5

ISGM Degree

The summit of the ISG pathway — original, research-led scholarship culminating in a dissertation, the most advanced academic work ISG offers, suited to future wine educators and researchers.

For: Candidates pursuing the highest level of ISG academic progression and formal research-based study.

Instructor support: Dedicated academic advisor guiding your research, equivalent to doctoral supervision.
